Today’s topic is saying salaam.

In ayah 86 of Surah Nisa, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala tells us the etiquette of offering and returning greetings known as salaam among Muslims. He says,

وَإِذَا حُيِّيتُم بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّواْ بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَآ أَوْ رُدُّوهَآ

“And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet with a better greeting or (at least) return it (in a like manner).”

Before the advent of Islam, the Arabs used to greet each other with the word حِيَّةٍ , which loosely translates to someone wishing you a life.

When Allah brought down this religion to us, He taught us to greet one another in a better way. He commanded us to use the words Assalaam o Alaikum.

The Islamic greeting has a lot of beautiful things linked to it.

1. Salaam is one of the names of Allah, and it means source of all peace (and safety). It is a gift for all Muslims sent by Allah.

2. Allah has made the Islamic greeting as a source of love between Muslim brothers and sisters.

3. It is a dua’a that means, “may peace be upon you”. You are committing the person to the security of Allah with this beautiful dua’a.

4. It is an offering of ‘salaamti’ to the person you are greeting, that he/she is safe from any harm that might come from you.

5. Saying salaam is a means to attain jannah.

6. It is a way to bring people together and promote love and unity within a Muslim community.

7. On a personal level, striving to be the first one in saying salaam is something Allah loves.

8. Being the first to say salaam removes arrogance from the heart.

Once a man asked from Holy Prophet (SAW) about which aspect of Islam was the best then Holy Prophet (PBUH) replied: “Feeding the hungry and saying salaam to those you know and those you don’t know.”(Bukhari)

Saying salaam is a means of entering Jannah. Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you about something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread salaam (the greeting of peace) among you.”(Muslim)

This Ramzan, let us try and inculcate this beautiful dua’a in our children and explain the importance of saying salaam.

Let us set an example to them that while the world says a meaningless “hello” or “hi”, we have been gifted with the beautiful dua’a of salam.

May Allah make it easy for us to learn this new habit, to teach this to our children and to be able to inspire others with this beautiful habit as well.

رمضان سیریز کے ساتویں روز خوش آمدید۔

آج کا موضوع ” سلام کرنا” ہے۔

سورۃالنساء کی آیت نمبر ۸۶ میں اللہ سبحانہ وتعالیٰ ہمیں سلام کرنے اور سلام کا جواب دینے کے آداب سکھاتے ہوئے فرماتے ہیں:

وَإِذَا حُيِّيتُم بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّواْ بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَآ أَوْ رُدُّوهَآ

اور جب تم کو کوئی دعا دے تو (جواب میں) تم اس سے بہتر (کلمے) سے (اسے) دعا دو یا انہیں لفظوں سے دعا دو بےشک خدا ہر چیز کا حساب لینے والا ہے ﴿۸۶﴾

طلوعِ اسلام سے پہلے، عرب سلام کے لیے حِيَّةٍ کا لفظ استعمال کرتے تھے جس کے معنی ہیں کسی کو زندگی کی دعا دینا۔

جب خدا نے اس دین کو ہماری طرف بھیجا تو اس نے ہمیں ایک دوسرے کو بہتر انداز میں سلام کرنے کا طریقہ سکھایا۔ ہمیں حکم دیا کہ سلام کے لیے ہم ‘ السّلام وعلیکم ‘ کے الفاط استعمال کریں۔

اسلامی طریقہء سلام سے کافی خوبصورت باتیں وابستہ ہیں:

۱۔ سلام کا لفظ خدا کے ناموں میں سے ایک ہے ا س لیے سلامتی کا مظہر ہے۔ یہ مسلمانوں کے لیے خدا کی طرف سے ایک تحفہ ہے۔

۲۔ خدا نے سلام کو مسلمان بھائیوں اور بہنوں کے درمیان محبت کا ذریعہ بنایا ہے۔

۳۔ اس دعا کا مطلب ہے “آپ پر رحمت ہو۔”اس خوبصورت دعا کے ذریعے آپ سامنے والے کے لیے خدا کی رحمت طلب کرتے ہیں۔

۴۔ اس سے ہم سلام بولنے والے پر سلامتی بھیجتے ہیں تاکہ وہ کسی بھی طرح کے نقصان سے محفوظ رہے۔

۵۔ سلام کہنا جنّت کا راستہ ہے۔

۶۔ اس سے امّتِ مسلمہ کے درمیان یکجہتی پیدا ہوتی ہے۔

۷۔ ذاتی طور پر سلام میں پہل کرنے والا خدا کے نزدیک محبوب ہے۔

۸۔ سلام میں پہل کرنے سے دل میں موجود تکبّر ختم ہوجاتا ہے۔

ایک شخص نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے پوچھا کہ اسلام کا کون سا کام بہتر ہے؟ تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا:

“ (محتاجوں کو) کھانا کھلانا اور جس کو تو جانتا پہنچانتا ہو اور جس کو نہ جانتا پہچانتا ہو، غرض سب (مسلمانوں) کو سلام کرنا۔”

صحیح بخاری

سلام جنّت میں داخل ہونے کا راستہ ہے۔ رسول اللہ نے فرمایا:

“قسم اُس ذات کی جس کے قبضے میں میری جان ہے، تم لوگ جنّت میں داخل نہ ہو گے، جب ت ایمان نہ لے آؤ اور تم مومن نہیں بن سکتے ، و۔ جب تک آپس میں محبّت نا کرنے لگو۔کیا میں تمہیں ایسی بات نا بتا دوں، جب تم اُسے کرنے لگو گے، تو تمہارے درمیان محبّت پیدا ہو جائے گی؟ تو تم اپنے درمیان سلام کو عام کرو۔”

آئیں اس رمضان، اپنے بچوں کو اس دعا کی فضیلت اور افادیت سے آگاہ کریں اور سلام کی عادت ڈالیں.

آئیں سلام کے خوبصورت تحفے کو اپنا کر ان لوگوں کے لیے مثال بنیں جو دنیاوی دکھاوے کا شکار ہو کر “ہیلو” اور “ہائے” جیسے بے معنی لفظوں کا استعمال کرتے ہیں.

خدا ہمارے لیے اس عادت کو آسان بنائے، ہم اسے اپنے بچوں کو سکھائیں اور اس اچھی اور خوبصورت عادت سے لوگوں کو متاثر کریں.
